RENNER – A pair of big innings proved too much for the Aberdeen Smittys to overcome against Renner in American Legion baseball action on Monday. The host Royals swept Aberdeen 6-0 and 13-8.

Renner scored five runs in the third inning of the opener.

The Royals had five of their 10 hits in the pivotal frame, including four straight to break the game open.

Aberdeen managed just three hits in the contest, including a double by Karson Borge.

The Smittys jumped in front in the nightcap with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.

Jehiel Aviles walked before singles from Borge and Joe Cogley. Aviles scored on a wild pitch and Levi Hoffman added an RBI single.

However, Renner responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the frame.

The Royals scored those runs with two outs. The hosts again had half of their 10 hits in the frame, including four straight, and also took advantage of a pair of walks, a hit batter, and an error.

The Smittys closed the deficit with four runs in the top of third inning.

Michael Dutenhoffer drove in the first run on a single, Drake Soderlund plated two more runs on a single, and Aviles added a sacrifice fly.

Renner scored one run in the bottom of third before Aberdeen pulled to within to 9-8 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Dutenhoffer and Branson Peterson each drove in a run, but that would be final scoring for Aberdeen. The Royals proceeded to score four unanswered runs the rest of the way – one in the fourth and fifth, and two in the sixth – for the final margin of difference.

The Smittys outhit Renner 11-10 in the contest, but left 10 runners on base.
