SIOUX FALLS – The Aberdeen Smittys lost a heartbreaker and also picked up a 10-run rule win during the second day of the Dakota Classic American Legion Baseball Tournament on Saturday.

Aberdeen got walked off in extra innings 3-2 by the Casselton Haymakers before grabbing a 12-2 win over Renner.

The Smittys and Casselton were scoreless through the first five innings until Aberdeen jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the sixth inning when Karson Borge had an RBI single that scored Jehiel Aviles.

The Haymakers responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game back up.

After neither squad scored in the seventh the game went to extra innings.

In the eighth inning, the Smittys once again jumped ahead with an RBI single from Borge that scored Aviles. And, like clockwork, Casselton responded, tying the game 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning.

After the Smittys failed to score in the top of the ninth, the Haymakers were able to walk it off with a game-winning RBI bunt in the bottom of the inning.

Smittys coach, Josh Steinwandt, credited his team’s defense for keeping the game close.

“Benny Eisenbiesz pitched great for us,” Steinwandt, said. “He just pitched a great game using his knuckleball and curveball to throw the batter off. Our offense just couldn’t find a way to get timely hits. But I’m super proud of the way our defense and pitching played.”

In the second game of the day, the Smittys jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it against Renner.

The Smittys scored one run in the top of the first when Jackson Post hit an RBI single.

Aberdeen put another run on the board in the top of the second with Borge hitting an RBI single for a two-run lead.

The Smittys added another run in the top of the fourth for a 3-0 advntage.

In the top of the fifth, the Smittys broke the game open, putting up four runs. Eisenbiesz tripled to plate two runs. Kannon Borge then hit an RBI single, before an Aviles ground out drove in another run to push the lead to 7-0.

“Our offense finally came around and strung together some huge hits,” Steinwandt said. “With Benny Eisenbiesz hitting a two-RBI triple and Kannon Borge with three hits at the bottom of the lineup.”

Renner got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs, but the Smittys tacked on five more runs in the sixth. Jackson Post homered to lead off the inning. JaSean Rivera added a two-run single, and the final two runs of the game were produced on walks with the bases loaded.

Aviles and Kannon Borge each finished with three hits in the contest.

“All together a great game.” Steinwandt said.

The Smittys are back in action in the three-day tourney with a game at 9:30 this morning.
