A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of May 3-9, 2026:
Last year on May 3, 2025: Mobridge native and Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott’s horse, Sovereignty ridden by Junior Alvarado, won the 151 st Kentucky Derby. It was the second Kentucky Derby win for the 71-year-old Mott. In 2019, Mott’s victory with 65–1 long shot Country House came after a 23-minute wait as racing officials studied video of the race and disqualified the apparent winner, Maximum Security, for interference. All 19 horses in the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby were descendants of the 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, reported the Louisville Courier Journal.
10 years ago on May 7, 2016: Paige Larson of NSU won the 1,500 meters at the prestigious Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls. Teammate Hanna Wahl was second.
20 years ago on May 3, 2006: Mitchell native Mike Miller of the Memphis Grizzlies won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award. Grizzlies president Jerry West said, “I’ve never seen a player work harder in my life than Mike.”
30 years ago on May 4, 1996: Sara Deckert won the 100-meter dash and 300 hurdles at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls. She is only one of four girls on her Doland track team.
40 years ago on May 3, 1986: Burt Beattie of Aberdeen was the Nebraska catcher as the Cornhuskers defeated Oklahoma State 6-2. It snapped the Cowboys’ 30-game win streak.
50 years ago on May 3, 1976: Milbank native and Pierre wrestling coach Dean Johnson has resigned to take a sales job at KWAT radio in Watertown. His Governors won the 1974 state wrestling championship.
