YANKTON – Aberdeen Central claimed a pair of Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ wrestling duals Thursday night in Yankton, defeating the host Gazelles 66-11 and edging Brandon Valley 45-35.
“We wrestled well against both teams and aggressive,” said Central coach Jake Flakus, “which is nice to see.”
Both of Central’s victories were fueled, in part, by empty weights, though the Golden Eagles won five of the seven matches contested against Yankton.
Against Brandon Valley, the Golden Eagles won four of the nine contested weights, including three pins from Maria Mathern (125 pounds), Line Paw Jone (155) and Lilly Nelson (170).
“A highlight against Brandon was the 125-pound match,” Flakus said. “Maria Mathern, who has been a JV wrestler, was put into the varsity lineup. She was down the whole match, and found a way to get the pin with only two seconds in the match.”

The Golden Eagles will be right back in action today competing at a tournament in Harrisburg.
