Golden Eagles runner-up at Pierre Invitational

PIERRE – Aberdeen Central put three golfers in the top 10 en route to a runner-up finish at the Pierre Invitational Tuesday.

Olivia Braun led the Golden Eagle contingent, finishing with a round of 78 on a blustery day on the links. As a team, Central was second with a team round of 333, just a handful of strokes off their season-opening round of 328. Mitchell, behind the play of medalist Allison Meyerink, won the team title.

“I think it was an average day for us for the most part,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “Not great, not bad. … I think if you asked our girls, I think they’d all say they would have liked to have done a little better.”

Central’s Hayley Wirebaugh and Emma Dohrer both carded rounds of 83.

“I think the thing that got us the most today was the speed of the greens,” Zimmerman said. “They were very fast.”

Zimmerman said the greens were mowed short in Pierre, something the Golden Eagles have not seen during their practice rounds in Aberdeen.

“Factor in the wind today, it was a challenging day,” Zimmerman said.

Still, for all the challenges Tuesday’s round offered, a runner-up team effort is nothing to scoff at.

“It’s going to have to be a team effort moving forward,” Zimmerman said. “It’s not going to be one or two individuals, it’s going to have to be a collective effort.”

Central’s Chloe Vikander epitomized that sentiment with a double-digit stroke improvement off her season-opening effort.

“She was over 100 last time and came in at 89 today,” Zimmerman noted. “Definitely a big improvement on her part, which is nice to see.”

Central will return home to host the Hub City Invitational, its only home tournament of the season on Thursday at Moccasin Creek Country Club.

Team Points: Mitchell 320, Aberdeen Central 333, Watertown 336, Rapid City Stevens 349, Pierre 363, Brookings 376, Yankton 395, Winner 432.
