BROOKINGS – Athletes from across the region recorded solid performances during the Scott Underwood Invitational indoor track and field meet in Brookings on Monday.

Jayden Johnson and Payton Brown of Milbank both captured first place finishes, as did Lucas Johnson of Great Plains Lutheran.

Jayden Johnson won the pole vault with teammate Samuel Rick second. Brown won the 3,200-meter run with teammate James Batchelor third. Lucas Johnson won the high jump.

Meanwhile a pair of Lake Region Conference girls each finished runner-up. Aberdeen Christian’s Shawnteah La Croix was second in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, and Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern was second in the 800-meter run.

La Croix was second to Arlington’s Chloe Raw, who was runner-up in both sprint races at last year’s Class B state meet.

“It was a solid day for Shawnteah,” said Christian coach Sam Bjorkman. “Obviously, Chloe Raw is running amazingly well.”

Milbank’s Siera Wenzl was third in the 200 and 400, and ran a leg on a third-place 1,600-meter relay quad.

Oliver Fieber was second in the 100-meter dash, and Robert Begalka was second in the shot put. Deuel’s Gabe Sather was third in the pole vault and fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles. Hamlin’s Cristian Rodriquez was third in the shot put, and teammate Noah Smith was fifth.

Emmatt Hanson of Milbank was fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

Fifth-place finishes went to Halle Bauer of Great Plains Lutheran in the 800, Katherine Prahl of GPL in the 300 hurdles, and Savanna Hayes of Faulkton in the shot put.

Christian had athletes that competed in a variety of events on the day.

“A lot of bests today for the team. It’s exciting for them,” Bjorkman said. “Hopefully, they’ll keep building. The kids need to keep working hard. There’s lots of work to do.”

That said, Bjorkman is looking forward to watching his athletes develop throughout the course of the season.

“The best part is seeing the kids,” Bjorkman said, “a young group growing and maturing as a team.”

The Knights are scheduled to compete in a meet at Mobridge on Thursday.
