In this year’s Class B state wrestling tournament, there will be many familiar teams competing for individual and team championships. The Redfield Pheasants are one of those familiar foes taking part in the tournament this weekend, which will be held at the Monument in Rapid City Thursday through Saturday.
The Pheasants have seven wrestlers that qualified for the tournament, with three ranked in the top four of their respective classes. Redfield coach Wade Schlotter hopes his team brings home some medals.
“We have three kids that we have that are ranked … at 106 in Brady Risetter, at 152, Mason Whitley, and at heavyweight, Grady Fey,” Schlotter said. “It’ll be nice to get our 220-pounder in there (Chase McGillivary), and those other three are the ones that we are hoping can bring home some medals.”
Risetter is the one seed in the 106-pound class and enters the tournament with a perfect record of 32-0. Whitley is seeded fourth in the 152-pound class and comes in with a record of 41-6, while Fey is seeded third in the 285-pound class and enters the tournament with a record of 39-1. Other wrestlers in the tournament for the Pheasants include Dylan Murray (18-22) at 170 pounds, Camden Murray (19-14) at 182 pounds, and Seth Siebrecht (21-13) at 195 pounds.
Overall, Schlotter hopes his team will perform well enough to be on the podium at the end of the weekend.
“We’re hoping to be a top ten (team), and hopefully we can get into the top eight,” Schlotter said. “Obviously it’s going to depend on how things shake out.”
