The numbers were staggering.
Aberdeen Roncalli played a nearly flawless first half on both ends of the floor Friday night. The end result was a 57-32 Northeast Conference girls’ basketball win over Webster at Roncalli Gym.
The Cavaliers made 12 of 15 shots from the field in the first quarter, scored the first 26 points of the game, and held Webster without a field goal until midway through the second period.
“We really defended well,” said Roncalli coach Derek Larson. “That’s where the whole thing started I thought. We defended well the first half.”
To be sure, the Roncalli defense was stifling. The Cavaliers forced seven turnovers in the first eight minutes and did not allow Webster any good looks.
“I think we played well on the offensive end, because we played well on the defensive end first,” Larson said.
It was Roncalli’s offense that was smoking. At one stage, the Cavaliers had made 14 of their first 17 attempts, including five three-point field goals. Ava Hanson led the shooting display, missing just one shot in seven tries in the first nine minutes of the game.
“I got open looks,” Hanson said, “but it felt good to shoot the ball.”
Roncalli received points from six different players in the barrage. Hanson said the players share the ball and look for open teammates.
“It really helps at practice all we focus on is moving the ball, getting each other open,” Hanson said. “We are a team.”
Put Roncalli’s efficient offense and suffocating defense together, and the Bearcats simply had no answer in the first half.
“They definitely came out and were lights out,” said Webster coach Eric Coyne. “We have to do a little more work on not allowing so many open shots, also. They did a great job of finding the open person and making shots.”
To the Bearcats’ credit, they never gave up and competed to the end, outscoring Roncalli in both the third and fourth quarters.
“We tried to just use the second half to build up a little bit and not waiting for the next game,” Coyne said.
Erin Case topped Webster with 13 points. Payton Snell contributed six points and six rebounds.

Hanson finished with 23 points and nine rebounds. The Cavaliers had five other players with at least five points.
It turned out to be a first half that will be hard to duplicate any time soon.
“We really shot the ball well,” Larson said. “We couldn’t have shot it much better than we did in the first half.”
Of course, it will always be defense first for the Cavaliers, who are now 4-1 on the season.
“We talk a lot about defense. Defense wins games,” Hanson said. “That’s all we focus on. Practice is a lot of defense.”
Roncalli is now off for the upcoming week before returning to action on Monday, Jan. 9 at Sully Buttes. Having a break is just fine with Hanson.
“It’s a rebuilding year. We have a lot to work on. We have a lot to do,” Hanson said. “Next week will be awesome just to get in the gym, work together, get better as a team.”
