The Aberdeen Central golf squad is ready to tee off the season today in a meet at Brandon.
The Golden Eagles will feature a young squad, but also one that has some experience.
“There are four of six players with at least one year of varsity experience,” said first-year Central coach Matt Brust. “Having that much knowledge and being able to help the inexperienced should go a long way in growth for next year.”
The Eagles roster includes lone senior Jacob Grau, lone junior Rylan Dykema, as well as sophomores Peyton Brust and Quincy Madsen, freshman Carter Blanchard, and seventh-grader Cole Brust.
Coach Brust noted that his sons have been playing on the South Dakota Golf Association Junior Tour and have had some solid finishes this summer.
A former player himself, Coach Brust knows how important it is to maintain focus, especially when trouble occurs out on the course.
“You have to always stay in the moment,” Coach Brust said. “Shots can get away from you pretty fast if you don’t pay attention. Make the next shot the only one that has your focus.”
That’s why Brust said that it will be key for his players to have “execution and focus on every tournament, every shot.”
While the season is just getting started, the Golden Eagles have already talked about some goals for the upcoming fall campaign. One of those goals is to have all six members be able to participate in this year’s Class AA state tournament.
Coach Brust said the goal is “to execute every shot, grow as individuals and as a team. There is now a qualifier for the state tournament so a goal is to qualify six players.”
It will be a busy start to the season for the Eagles, who play in the Warrior-Brandon Valley Invitational today and tomorrow, the Milbank Invitational on Thursday, the Pierre Invitational on Aug. 24, the Huron Invitational on Aug. 27, and the Hub City Invitational at Lee Park Golf Course on Aug. 31.
