Aberdeen Central got off to a fast start and made quick work of Rapid City Central 9-0 in a tennis dual Friday morning at the Holgate Courts.

“We got off to a good start for the first time in weeks. You’re always worried because we played them the first weekend of the year and really handled them pretty easily,” said Golden Eagles coach Trent Kurtz. “So you’re always worried about a little let down or overconfidence and there was none of that. The kids played really well. They were smart all day.”

Kurtz said he was a little concerned about playing a match late in the day on Thursday and then turning around and having a mid-morning match.

“We showed up an hour early to warm up and you could tell they were a little sluggish, not getting out on the court right away,” Kurtz said. “Usually they show up and get out there and start hitting right away. They were kind of waiting until they were told to get out there. So I was definitely worried about that, that tied in with our lack of getting off to a good start, but our guys did a really good job.”

The hosts did not drop a single set during the dual.

Aberdeen Central’s match against Aberdeen Roncalli got postponed later in the afternoon because of the cold and wind. That will now be played Thursday, May 6.

The Eagles head to a triangular in Sioux Falls on Monday where they will face Mitchell and Sioux Falls Washington in what is likely be opposite weather conditions.

“It’s supposed to be 80 down there. That’s going to be a new challenge,” Kurtz said. “We have a lot of good athletes and I think we’re in OK condition coming into the year, better than we normally are, but when you’re out playing in the heat when you haven’t yet, that’s a huge factor. That’s going to be a concern playing two tough ones on Monday.”
