The annual State Track and Field Meet once again featured record-breaking performances by individuals in all three classes.

Area athletes captured more than a dozen state titles in open events, led by Northwestern’s Ella Boekelheide who won the Class B 800, 1,600, and 3,200. She also ran on a first-place relay. Deuel’s Oliver Fieber won the 100 and 200 dashes and also ran on a winning relay in Class A.

Among the MVP award winners were Boekelheide in Class B Girls Running, Aberdeen Central’s Taryn Hermansen in Class AA Girls Field, and Webster’s Matthew Mount in Class A Boys Field.

Last week we attempted to project the eventual state team champions based solely on the final leaders. Here is a look at those projections, followed by what exactly transpired.

CLASS AA BOYS

PROJECTED TOTAL: On paper this appears to be the most lopsided of all of the divisions. Sioux Falls Lincoln is projected to score a whopping 195 points.

While that number may be a bit high, it appears the Patriots are poised to score points in a variety of ways and win half of the 20 events. Brandon Valley is projected to finish second with 97 points.

ACTUAL RESULT: Sioux Falls Lincoln pulled away down the stretch to win the state team title with 178 points. The Patriots ended up winning nine of the 20 events. Brandon Valley was runner-up with 115 points.

CLASS AA GIRLS

PROJECTED TOTAL: Things could get interesting here. It appears the depth of Rapid City Stevens will allow the Raiders to score 115 points. That is slightly more than Harrisburg, which is projected to score 101. Spearfish will also likely have a strong meet, finishing just in front of Lincoln for third.

ACTUAL RESULT: Rapid City Stevens captured the team title with 111 points. Harrisburg finished runner-up with 98, followed by Sioux Falls Lincoln in third.

CLASS A BOYS

PROJECTED TOTAL: While Lennox won’t win as many events as some squads, the Orioles are primed to score in a lot of ways and finish with 98 points, enough to win the team title. Sioux Falls Christian, which always seems to be in the mix, is projected to score 77 points.

ACTUAL RESULT: Sioux Falls Christian once again came up big when it mattered most and won the team championship with 110 points. Lennox finished runner-up with 78.5 points, followed by Hill City in third with 64.

CLASS A GIRLS

PROJECTED TOTAL: Sioux Falls Christian could win more than half of the 20 events and will be a strong favorite to win the team crown. The Chargers are projected to score 163. Lennox figures to be runner-up and could reach 107 points, but it won’t be enough to keep up with SFC.

ACTUAL RESULT: Sioux Falls Christian had a huge meet, racking up 178 points to win the state team title. The Chargers won 11 of the 20 total events. Lennox finished second with 100 points.

CLASS B BOYS

PROJECTED TOTAL: It appears that Philip is favored to win this division. The Scotties are projected to score 94 points, which will be more than enough to outdistance a division filled with balance. Bennett County will lead a solid pack for second with 52 points.

ACTUAL RESULT: Philip ended up capturing the state team championship with 76 points. Bennett County was runner-up with 56, followed by Freeman in third with 45.

CLASS B GIRLS

PROJECTED TOTAL: Everything points to Bennett County here. The Warriors are projected to score 100 points, which will give them a nice cushion to work with. Ipswich could very well be the runner-up with a projected total of 62 points, followed by Colman-Egan with 54.

ACTUAL RESULT: Bennett County finished with 98 points to win the team championship. Colman-Egan finished second with 60 points, followed by Ipswich in third with 49.
