SIOUX FALLS – The Aberdeen Smittys got back on the field after nearly a 10-day layoff on Saturday. The Smittys fell to Sioux Falls Roosevelt 10-4 before dropping an 14-4 decision to O’Gorman.

It marked just the third and fourth games of the season for Aberdeen so far this spring.

“It was pretty good to get back out there again. Spring baseball is what it is,” said Smittys coach Nathan Gonnelly. “It’s just good to go out and play some good competition.”

While Aberdeen dropped both games, Gonnelly saw positives compared to its only games earlier this season.

“I’m still seeing a lot of things that we need to work on,” he said, “but there certainly is improvement.”

The Smittys got their day off to a solid start with four runs in the top of the first inning against Roosevelt.

Jackson Post had a run-scoring double and JaSean Rivera also knocked in a run in the frame.

However, the Aberdeen offense dried up after that while Roosevelt scored twice in the bottom of the first, five times in the second, and three more in the sixth. Post finished with two hits in the contest.

Aberdeen also scored first against O’Gorman, but that lead did not last long. OG scored four runs in the bottom the first inning, and eventually opened a 7-1 lead. After the Smittys climbed back to within 7-4, OG exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning.

Post had a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning and drove in three runs total.

Gonnelly pointed out that the team had less errors than its previous doubleheader and had pitchers work deeper into the contests.

“It’s not the outcome that you want score-wise, but it’s the growth in the process that we’re slowly starting to see,” Gonnelly said.

The Smittys will host Watertown in a twinbill on Wednesday at Fossum Field.

Gonnelly likes the direction his team is heading.

“Put our best foot forward, kind of make things happen, and continue to see progress,” he said.
