A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 5-11, 2026:
Last year on April 8, 2025: One unidentified person came one first-round women’s NCAA Tournament game away from perfection in the CBS Sports Bracket Challenge. They predicted 66 of the 67 games correctly. Their one miss occurred when 10th-seeded South Dakota State defeated No. 7 Oklahoma State 74-68. Coming that close to a perfect bracket is nearly impossible. The NCAA computed the chances of getting every game correct at one in 9.2 quintillion. It didn’t compute the chances of finishing with just one loss.
10 years ago on April 9, 2016: SDSU football coach John Stiegelmeier said spring football drills are going well. Among the SDSU standouts are tight end Dallas Goedert of Britton-Hecla.
20 years ago on April 8, 2006: The O’Gorman boys’ tennis team defeated Aberdeen Central and Aberdeen Roncalli by the identical score of 8-1. Winners for the Aberdeen team were JD Carrels (Roncalli) and Derek White (Central)
30 years ago on April 6, 1996: Jon Madsen of Doland won the heavyweight title at the national AAU Meet in Oklahoma.
40 years ago on April 6, 1986: Tom Savage of Sioux Falls has published a 1985 yearbook of racing from area and regional auto racing tracks, including Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen. It is entitled Dirt Track Fury.
50 years ago on April 10, 1976: Amherst natives and Langford/Northern State graduates Rich and Rollie Greeno were part of the Corn Palace Relays in Mitchell. Rich is the track coach at Sioux Falls Lincoln and brother Rollie the track coach at Jamestown College. Also a part of the meet was Mark Greeno (Rich’s son) of Sioux Falls College and Rollie’s sons Gregg and Rollie Jr. of Jamestown.
