A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 8-14, 2026:

Last year on March 8, 2025: Sioux Falls Jefferson ended the Aberdeen Central girls’ basketball season 57-54 on a 55-foot, halfcourt plus heave from Abby Horner that rattled around the rim before dropping in.

10 years ago on March 11, 2016: Most of South Dakota’s 12 college women’s basketball teams had a great 2015-16 season, including Northern State, which qualified for its third straight national tournament. The Wolves (23-8) were one of seven South Dakota schools to advance to national post-season play and one of eight teams that won at least 21 games. Plus, the University of South Dakota women won the Division I Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

20 years ago on March 10, 2006: With the score tied 34-34 heading into the second overtime of the State AA Girls’ Basketball Tournament semifinal game, a cup of soda and ice was thrown on the Frost Arena floor in Brookings. Officials decided that they came from the Brookings’ student section so the Bobcats were assessed a technical foul. Tessa Wilka of O’Gorman converted two free throws and the Knights wouldn’t relinquish the lead as they went on to beat the state’s top-rated team 42-38.

30 years ago on March 8, 1996: Derek Miles of USD finished seventh in the long jump at the NCAA DII National Indoor Track Championships.

40 years ago on March 8, 1986: Dave Harvey of Northern State won the 126-pound NAIA national wrestling title and the Wolves finished seventh as a team with 47 points. It was his second national title and he was 36-0 this season. The Steamboat Springs (CO) native had a career record of 83-6 for the Wolves.

50 years ago on March 13, 1976: Doland won the first Class B state gymnastics tourney. Crystal Weems won the all-around, vault and floor exercise state titles while Doland teammates Karol Barrie (uneven bars) and Darlene Heer (balance beam) won state titles as well.
