Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 13-19:

Last year on Oct. 14, 2023: South Dakotan Kalen DeBoer and his adopted Washington home were the targets of the famed ESPN College Gameday crew and show. The biggest spectacular in college football came to Seattle to preview the No. 8 Oregon vs. No. 7 Washington game (a 123-year rivalry) later that day. Hundreds of fired up fans filled Red Square near Husky Stadium despite drizzles of rain, dreariness and the early morning hour (show started at 6 a.m. locally). Gameday hosts Rece Davis, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and Pat McAfee said many of the fans had been in Red Square since 4 p.m. the previous day. Washington coach DeBoer (Milbank native) was featured prominently during the three-hour show as were his undefeated Huskies (6-0). Washington scored a game-winning touchdown with 98 seconds left in a wild back-and-forth 36-33 win over the Ducks (5-1) later that day.

10 years ago on Oct. 14, 2014: 50 years ago today in 1964, Pine Ridge-born Billy Mills earned one of South Dakota’s and the nation’s greatest victories by winning the 10,000 meters at the Tokyo Olympics.

20 years ago on Oct. 15, 2004: Groton stopped Deuel 16-8 in Clear Lake. Victor Schuring kicked a 29-yard field goal and caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Wanner. Nick Weber scored on a 32-yard interception return as well for the winners.

30 years ago on Oct. 13, 1994: A couple of nights ago, Angie Gerlach was all over the floor in Mount Vernon’s 37-35 overtime win over Ethan. That is because there were two Angie Gerlach’s playing. Gerlach is a Mount Vernon senior who is averaging 24 points per game while her distant cousin with the same name is an Ethan junior who is a defensive specialist.

40 years ago on Oct. 14, 1984: Bridgewater native Sparky Anderson managed the Detroit Tigers to the World Series title over San Diego in the fifth game of the series. It was Anderson’s fifth world series. He was the skipper of the Cincinnati Reds world titles in 1975 and 1976, and his Reds were the runners-up to Baltimore in 1970 and Oakland in 1972. In the 1972 series, Dick Williams was the manager of Oakland, and in 1984, he was the manager of San Diego.

50 years ago on Oct. 17, 1974: Rapid City native Dick Green and his Oakland Athletics teammates won their third World Series in a row.
