A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 24-30:
Last year on Dec. 29, 2022: The Providence Academy of Minnesota girls’ basketball team defeated Brandon Valley 58-32 in the Hoop City Classic. The winners’ five starters, Maddyn Greenway, Brooke Hohenecker, Grace and Hope Counts and Emma Millerbernd, combined for 44 points. All five starters have South Dakota connections: Greenway’s dad Chad was a multi-sport at Mount Vernon and a long-time NFL linebacker with the Minnesota Vikings. Hohenecker’s mom Amy (Von Wald) was a state champion runner at Hoven and an All-American at Northern State. The Counts’ parents were both former SDSU athletes (dad Chris played basketball and mom Lisa played volleyball). Millerbernd’s dad Nate played football at SDSU. Maddyn Greenway, a highly-recruited freshman, already has scored more than 1,500 career points.
10 years ago on Dec. 24, 2013: Injuries led Augustana men’s basketball coach Tom Billeter to turn former three-time all-conference Vikings football player and his volunteer student assistant coach, Isaac Jorgensen, into a player for the second semester of the season. In his first organized game since he was a senior player at Sioux Falls Roosevelt in 2008, Isaac Jorgensen had two rebounds and one assist in 11 minutes in a win over Wayne State.
20 years ago on Dec. 28, 2003: Derrick McCauley had 25 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists to pace Aberdeen Central over Rapid City Central 53-50.
30 years ago on Dec. 28, 1993: Class AA’s third-ranked Aberdeen Central defeated Class A’s fifth-ranked Milbank 83-55 in boys’ basketball. Jesse Johnson scored 20 and Shawn Burgard 16 for the Golden Eagles. Scott Ruoff had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Milbank.
40 years ago on Dec. 27, 1983: Host Northern State won its first-round game over Winona State 97-80 in the Northern Intercollegiate Tournament. The Wolves (11-0) got 24 points from Steve Vlk, 23 from Kevin King, 15 from Scott Deadrick (also 12 rebounds) and 14 from Gene Lorenz.
50 years ago on Dec. 29, 1973: Webster nipped Bristol 72-68 in boys’ basketball behind Mike Walter’s 28 points and 21 rebounds. Teammate Scott Sikkink added 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Cliff Anderson pumped in 24 points for Bristol.
