The Aberdeen Smittys swept Spearfish in an American Legion baseball doubleheader with some high-powered offense to get their third win in a row and close out the year at Fossum Field.

The Smittys rallied to take the first game 9-6 and then recorded a 13-3 win in the second contest on Thursday afternoon.

Spearfish jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener. Aberdeen responded with one run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Karson Borge.

Spearfish kept its foot on the pedal with four more runs in the top of the third for a 5-1 advantage. Again, the Smittys responded with a run in the bottom half of the fame on a sac fly from Joe Cogley.

Jackson Berry, who came on in relief in the third inning for the Smittys, held Spearfish scoreless until the seventh inning and in the meantime the Aberdeen offense came to life.

“He came in there and threw it by them and he had good off-speed. Threw them both for strikes,” said Smittys coach Josh Steinwandt. “He kept hitters off balance and did an absolutely great job. In five innings, he only gave up one (run). That’s all you can ask for.”

Levi Hoffman got the Aberdeen bats going with a leadoff double in a five-run fourth inning, followed by a Branson Peterson RBI single.

After an error and a single, Jehiel Aviles came up to bat with the bases loaded and delivered a triple that cleared the bases to put the Smittys in front 6-5.

“I got a pitch outside, so I just took it that way,” Aviles said. “I just knew that it was an important position in the game with us being down, and I just did anything I could to help my team.”

Aviles has been a key player on offense and defense for the Smittys all summer.

“He has been our leadoff guy the whole year and he finds his way on base,” Steinwandt said. “He’s just a great guy to have on the team, great leadoff guy, just does everything the right way and never complains about what he needs to do. And he’s a great center fielder. He tracks down literally everything out there. He’s just a great baseball player and great guy in general.”

Cogley brought in Aviles with an RBI triple to push the margin to 7-5.

The Smittys tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles from Michael Dutenhoffer and Hoffman.

Spearfish scored one run in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.

Aviles and Hoffman both finished with three hits in the victory.

The Smittys fell behind by two runs to start the second game as well, before responding with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning on run-producing singles from Dutenhoffer and Bennett Eisenbiesz.

The Smittys took the a lead in the second inning on a Borge RBI single.

Each squad scored a run in the third inning before the Smittys broke the game open in the fourth with seven runs.

Cogley got the scoring started with a two-run RBI double. Dutenhoffer then followed with an RBI single to make it 7-3.

JaSean Rivera added a sac fly, and after the second out of the inning, the next three hitters all put up RBI singles, with Easton Kludt, Aviles and Borge extending the lead to 11-3.

Cogley then ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to invoke the 10-run rule.

“That’s what it looks like right there when we put it all together and we can play all three facets of the game the right way,” Steinwandt said. “We fielded the ball, didn’t have an error today, fielded the ball, pitched and hit the ball. That’s what it looks like right there: a 10-run rule. This is what this team is capable of doing. And that Spearfish team is ahead of us in ranking and we just handled business today and that’s what we needed to do. That’s how good this team can be and that’s why I get frustrated sometimes when we don’t produce. But when we do produce, that’s what it looks like.”

Borge, Dutenhoffer and Hoffman all had three hits in the second game. Borge and Cogley each drove in three.

The Smittys are putting it all together at the right time of year with regions starting on Wednesday.

“I think just knowing that it’s coming down to it and just trusting that it doesn’t matter who we play for regions,” Aviles said. “We’re a good team. Even though where we are at right now doesn’t show it, we know we just have to trust each other and trust the process that we have and put it together.”

Aberdeen will take a three-game winning streak into the postseason.

“We’re getting hot at the right time,” Steinwandt said. “That’s what we need to do. Get hot before regions. We’re finding our bats; 18 hits right there, we haven’t done that the whole year. It doesn’t really matter who we have coming up; we all know we can compete with anyone who we get. And they’re going to be good, but we’re good too, so we can compete with anyone we get.”
