WATERTOWN – Aberdeen Central began its boys’ wrestling season with four straight wins at the Marv Sherrill Dual Tournament in Watertown. The Golden Eagles won in convincing fashion in all four matchups, including a 51-24 win over Yankton; a 48-30 decision over Tea Area; a 66-12 victory over Milbank; and a 51-26 win over Canby, Minn.

“It was a pretty good start,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “We’re happy with were it’s at, and it’s only going to get better from here.”

The tournament was the first of the season for the Golden Eagles, who are the defending State A runners-up from a year ago.

Bowden said he appreciated the way his guys approached the day.

“They attacked,” he said. “They went out and got after it and looked to score points. … They were trying to find bonus points and get off the mat, and that’s what we want. It was high-effort from everyone.”

Central got at least three wins from eight different wrestlers. All eight finished with multiple bonus-point victories, including Mason Backous with three pins at 132 points, Marlon Bautista with three falls at 144, Ridley Waldo with three at 157, Porter Lozenski with three at 154 and Owen Ward with three more at two different weights, competing at both 190 and 215 on the day.

“I think it was a very good team effort,” Bowden said. “Guys were competing with one another to see who could get off the mat the fastest.”

Bowden noted that the first competition of the season always opens the door to more and better practice plans as the season moves forward.

“Just take another step in the progression,” he said. “Each guy, now that we have a little bit of work, now we can start working individually with kids. The first couple weeks we’re just putting stuff in front of them. … now we can start getting into the weeds a little bit individually.”
