The scripts flipped Tuesday night at Roncalli Gym.

Aberdeen Roncalli swept Mobridge-Pollock 25-17, 25-9, 25-13 in non-conference volleyball action. The two faced each other at the Northwestern Tournament on Saturday, with the Tigers defeating the Cavaliers in a best-of-3 match.

Roncalli felt its performance last weekend wasn’t up to par, and made an effort to change it for the rematch.

“Just encouraging each other. We knew that we were a better team than what we showed on Saturday, just getting back to normal,” said Roncalli senior Rylee Voeller. “Just coming in with the whole new mentality of like, we know we can do better, let’s clean this up and play the game we know we can.”

The Cavaliers worked on areas that they felt needed improvement and it paid dividends as Roncalli avenged that setback.

“We worked on finishing. Like on Monday, we did a game called slip and slide, where it’s like working on finishing a game and I feel like that did really help us,” said Roncalli’s Jillian Ellwein. “When we did lose a point, we learned to side out, and so then we didn’t get down in those moments.”

The Cavaliers also studied film to see where they could improve for the rematch.

“We knew what the open spots were, so we talked a lot about take out their setter, take out their middle, aim for camp, deep corners,” said Roncalli coach Leesa Ware. “That’s exactly what they did tonight.”

Mobridge-Pollock was coming off a tough loss to Ipswich on Monday, and the Tigers weren’t quite ready for the new Roncalli attack.

“We just came out a little flat. We had a tough game (Monday) against Ipswich, so we might be a little tired,” said Mobridge-Pollock coach Rose Henderson. “Kudos to Aberdeen. They came with a really good attack at us, put us on our heels, and we just couldn’t get back up.”

That attack was shown early on as Roncalli set the pace with a fast offense, led by Voeller who ended the first set with four kills.

“We started off strong, and obviously, it looked like we had the momentum the whole game. It kind of just set the tone of the game,” Voeller said. “We came out and we kind of proved to ourselves like we know this is the team we are, and we proved that we’re better than that. And it was very nice for us to start out strong.”

The offensive output for the Cavaliers kept going strong, as Ellwein led the way with four kills in the second set. Ellwein talked about how key the second set was in winning the match.

“Winning the second set is really huge, especially after winning the first set because really, they don’t have a set won. If they would win that second set, it would be different,” Ellwein said. “Because then it’s like, oh you have to go into four sets, but since we won the second set, it’s really huge. It’s like we don’t have to go into a fourth set, like we can do this in three sets.”

Going into the third set after winning the first two by a combined 24 points, the Cavaliers knew they needed to stay aggressive.

“We did not want to go into four sets, so we knew we came out strong the whole game and our coaches said ‘Don’t give up,’” Voeller said. “Keep pushing, keep proving to ourselves like this is the team we are, keep playing strong and get this game over with.”

The Tigers didn’t roll over, however, and found a little bit of rhythm in the final set.

“You know it shows a little bit of maturity and hopefully some growth that we’ll take into our next match,” said Henderson.

In the third set, Roncalli’s Gabby Thomas led the way with four kills, marking the third different player leading a set in kills. The variety in the offensive attack from the Cavaliers helped set them up for success, led by communication.

“I feel like our offense is kind of flourishing, our defense is flourishing. We’ve talked a lot about communication tonight, and I think that they came out really strong with communication,” Ware said. “You could tell when our communication is on, we’re an on team … but the moment our communication turns off, it’s like everything turns off.”
