The Aberdeen Cougars scored multiple goals in every period on the way to an 8-2 boys’ hockey victory over the Sioux Center Storm on Saturday afternoon.

Aberdeen pulled away from a 1-1 tie in the middle of the opening period, scoring five unanswered goals to take control.

“The boys played pretty good today for the most part,” said Cougars coach Dana Myhre. “We only took a couple of penalties which definitely helps, and capitalized on a few of their penalties.”

Derek Holland finished with a hat trick in the victory, scoring a goal in the first period before tacking on two more in the third.

Carter Vilhauer found the back of the net twice for Aberdeen, scoring to end the first period as well as open the second.

The Cougars also received goals from Jace Byram, Austin Schmit and Paxton Dallmann.

Byram finished with three assists, while Logan Fischbach and Wheeler Malsam each had a pair of assists.

Aberdeen outshot the Storm by a 42-12 margin.

“Got a bit sloppy towards the end of each period and need to clean that up,” Myhre said, “but overall a good win.”

The same two teams are back on the ice at 3 this afternoon at the Odde Ice Center.

“We will just try to build on what we did today,” Myhre said, “and hopefully do it even better tomorrow.”
