Aberdeen Central served notice early on that it was going to play aggressively Friday night.
The Golden Eagles did major damage from behind the service line to fuel a 25-10, 25-19, 25-6 non-conference volleyball victory over Rapid City Central at Golden Eagles Arena.
“It was good. It was fun to watch them serve that way,” said Golden Eagles coach Jackie Bindenagel. “I felt like they had a lot of confidence back there, so hopefully when we get into some of those tight matches, they can go back there with that confidence, because you have to be able to serve aggressively all the time.”
It was Taylin Kleffman that set the tone early in the opening set with back-to-back aces and the Golden Eagles were off and running from there.
The hosts owned an 11-4 advantage before Abigail DeVries stepped to the service line. By the time the senior was done, the Golden Eagles held a commanding 22-4 cushion.
“It was good. A big chunk of the game was serves,” DeVries said. “I think their weakest part was serve receive, so just going back there and doing what’s best, and serving.”
DeVries said her coaches gave her some advice on where to serve the ball and where the Cobblers’ weakest link was located.
“The coaches give me a spot, a seam to serve,” she said, “and pick on people who can’t get the ball up.”
DeVries said a key to her serving style is to collect herself before she hits the ball so it doesn’t fly over the end line.
“I have a lot of adrenaline, so taking a step back, making sure I don’t bomb it out of bounds is good,” DeVries said. “Just control, taking a deep breath before I serve is a good thing.”
While DeVries had a big night, she had no idea she had nearly served a dozen points in a row before a coach informed her of the streak.
“I thought I served like maybe four in a row, but she was like, oh you served 11,” DeVries said, “and I was like oh my gosh, OK.”
The Eagles finished with 11 aces as a team. Bindenagel was pleased that her players were aggressive, but not to the point of having unforced errors.
“You find a passer that you can pick on a little bit and they did that,” Bindenagel said. “They found a nice balance between aggressive and not reckless.”
The Eagles dominated the last two sets as well, although things got a bit interesting in the second set when the Cobblers nearly erased all of a double-digit deficit with late 9-2 surge. However, the host team closed out the set on a 4-1 run, and then gave up just six points the rest of the night. DeVries served six straight points in the final set and finished with 19 points from the service line in the match.

Freshman Kamdyn Borge topped the Eagles with 12 kills, and Lauryn Burckhard contributed eight. Alivia Miller had 27 set assists.
Aberdeen featured a different lineup for the third match this season, something that Bindenagel had planned on in order find the best blend with so many new faces on the squad this year.
“We told the kids when the season started there’s going to be a lot of moving pieces for a while, and we just have to find the right mix,” Bindenagel said, “and it’s a great group of kids that understands that.”
The progress from Tuesday’s season opener to Friday’s match was evident.
“Getting to play with everybody and just getting a lot of reps is really important,” DeVries said, “and I think that’s contributed to the success right now.”
The Golden Eagles are 2-1 after playing three matches in four days. DeVries said the players wanted to cap the week on a high note.
“Just go out with a bang,” she said. “It’s the last game of the week and we want to end on a win.”
