When the Super V Region Wrestling Tournament takes place Saturday at Wachs Arena, the event will have a national tourney feel to it.

That’s because the tournament will feature some of the top wrestlers in all of NCAA Division II.

While the regional always has quality competitors, the addition of Parkside in Wisconsin only adds to its overall depth.

“Obviously, having Parkside in here is big,” said Northern coach Rocky Burkett. “St. Cloud won the nationals duals this year. University of Mary got third at it. Upper Iowa got fifth or sixth. And then the next week, Parkside, who didn’t get invited to it, beat St. Cloud in a dual, and we beat Mary in a dual this year. And then you throw Augustana in there, they haven’t had a lot of their guys most of the year and I think some of them, they’re getting them back. I think they were pre-season number four or five in the country.”

Add it all together, and there will be quality matches from start to finish.

The Wolves enter the event ranked 20th as a team. Northern has a pair of individual wrestlers who are rated. Cole Huss is third at 197 pounds and Wyatt Turnquist is seventh at 149.

Turnquist, 17-2 on the season, was named first-team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference on Wednesday, while Huss, 11-3, was chosen second-team all-conference.

Burkett is hoping to qualify as many wrestlers as possible for next month’s national tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The top three wrestlers in each weight class will advance to nationals.

“I think if we wrestle our best we could do pretty well. I don’t really have a goal as far as what place or things like that,” Burkett said. “Our goal is to try to be top 10, top 5 at the national tournament, which the only way to do that is you have to get five or six guys out of here, at least four guys that can be guaranteed placers at the national tournament.”

That’s easier said than done, especially with the strength of this year’s region.

“It’s going to be tough,” Burkett said. “This year, the region, I always say it’s really good, but I feel like this year, it’s really, really good.”

In order for the Wolves to wrestle to their full potential, Burkett said his members will have to take advantage of competing in front of their home crowd.

“Enjoy the time together and then cheer each other on,” Burkett said. “I think that’s the biggest thing, and come together as a team.”

Action gets under way at 9 a.m. Saturday. The finals are expected to start somewhere around 3:30 or 4 p.m.

Burkett said some of the marquee matches at the regional will be as good as they get in Division II.

“I think if people want to come watch some great wrestling,” Burkett said, “there’s going to be some matches that are probably national final matches getting wrestled here.”
