BRANDON – The Aberdeen Central girls’ wrestling program battled its way to a runner-up finish at the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament Thursday night. The Golden Eagles got a championship effort from Madison Little (110 pounds) and runner-up finishes from four others en route to the second-place team showing.

Defending champion Pierre retained its hold on the top spot, finishing with 168 total points. Central ended the day with 150 points.

“Pretty good day, left a few matches out there,” said Central coach Jake Flakus, “but a second place finish is still something to be proud of. We had eight girls be All-ESD, with Maddi Little as our lone champ.”

Little cruised her way through the 110-pound bracket with a pair of wins by fall. Her closest match came in the semifinals where she earned a 3-2 decision over Benazir Wilson of Harrisburg.

Four other Golden Eagles advanced to the championship matches of their respective brackets, including Rakyrah Wallace (140), Allison Neitzel (145), Lin Paw Jone (155) and Lilly Nelson (170). All four finished in runner-up position.

Jasmine Maas (115), Imani Pippens (130) and Mila Hobbs (135) each claimed third, while Paisley Stewart (100) was fourth.

Central will now turn its attention to the Region 3 tournament next weekend in Mitchell, as the Golden Eagles will be vying for state tournament spots in that event.

“We are now shifting our focus to regions,” Flakus said, “to hopefully qualify as many girls as possible for the state tournament.”
