A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Feb. 8-14, 2026:
Last year on Feb. 8, 2025: Class A boys’ basketball in South Dakota has a new single-game record holder. Marvin Richard III scored 62 points to help Pine Ridge defeat Lakota Tech. The junior is averaging 35.2 points per game and has six games of 40 or more points this season. The old Class A record of 60 points in a game was held by Alejandro Rama of Mahpiya Luta (formerly Red Cloud) and Josh Mueller of West Central. Rama scored 60 in his team’s 82-72 win over St. Francis on Feb. 1, 2019. Mueller scored 60 in his team’s 94-80 win over Sioux Valley in the State A Tournament semifinals on March 16, 2001.
10 years ago on Feb. 12, 2016: Coach Paul Sather and his NSU men’s basketball team defeated Minnesota-Duluth 78-72. The Wolves got 68 points from a combination of D.J. Pollard, Skye Warwick, Darin Peterka, Bo Fries and Carter Evans.
20 years ago on Feb. 14, 2006: The Presentation College women’s basketball team beat Minnesota-Morris as Morris had four players foul out, three technical fouls and finished with four players after a Morris player was ejected. PC won the women’s game 77-62 at the Strode Center in Aberdeen, winning their first conference title in school history. The Saints made 33 of 40 free throws. In the men’s game, a fan was thrown out for harassing an official as the Morris men defeated PC 79-65.
30 years ago on Feb. 10, 1996: Rapid City Stevens sophomore Taylor Baker won the State AA all-around title for the third year in a row. She is the first South Dakota high school gymnast to accomplish the feat.
40 years ago on Feb. 8, 1986: Hayti native Karla Stevenson scored 38 points to pace the SDSU women’s basketball team to a 76-67 win over Augustana. Stevenson scored 33 against Northern State earlier this season.
50 years ago on Feb. 13, 1976: Rosholt defeated Waubay 76-67 in boys’ basketball. The winners got 34 points and 15 rebounds from Tom Quaal while the Dragons got 21 points and 13 rebounds from Marv Ryan.
