The first performance of the Aberdeen Central gymnastics team Thursday night featured performance and promise.

The Golden Eagles fell to Jamestown, N.D. in a dual 138.3 to 129.1 in action that saw Central’s Hattie Gederos win the vault and Regan Lust win the floor exercise.

Lust also finished second on the beam, and fifth on bars on the way to a runner-up finish in all-around.

“I’m actually really happy with how I did,” Lust said. “I wasn’t expecting to do that well considering it’s the first meet, so I’m really proud of myself and the team.”

Lust said that floor exercise is her favorite event.

“I really like to tumble,” she said, “and I really think I show my personality on floor and put a lot of time into my tumbling and jumps.”

Lust said it takes a while to get all of her routine down before the start of the season.

“You kind of work on it in your own time,” Lust said, “so for me, it took me around 2-3 weeks.”

The junior was able to record a couple of state-qualifying marks to aid her along the way in her quest to get to this year’s state tournament.

“I already got two state qualifying scores tonight, beam and floor,” Lust said, “so hopefully these next few meets I can get a few more, but I think that definitely boosted my confidence.”

As well as she did, Central coach Mickey Everson said Lust recorded solid scores despite a couple of rare miscues.

“Regan for getting second, she fell on vault, which is not like her at all,” Everson said. “She’s been nailing that vault in practice. … She can get two points higher than she did today.”

Everson said that despite finishing second in beam that Lust has room to improve that mark as well.

“She got a 9 and she touched her hands on the floor on beam when she landed,” Everson said. “Again, not like her. So she had a couple of flukes, but it didn’t bring her down.”

Lust talked about the beam, which happened to be Central’s first apparatus of the evening.

“I was pretty nervous and shaky before beam,” Lust said, “so I was surprised that I stayed on the whole time and made everything look good and clean.”

Everson was pleased with her entire team’s effort, especially on beam since it was the first event of the dual.

“On beam we stayed on and we started on beam. That was terrifying to them,” Everson said. “‘Oh we got to start with beam.’ … Beam is kind of nerve-wrecking and while they’re shaky already, because the meet’s about to start and they’re terrified, and then we start shaky. They still did really good with that.”

Central’s Alexis Bomesberger tied for second on the vault and finished fifth in floor.

Everson was happy with her team’s point total for the first competition of the season.

“Pretty pleased overall,” Everson said, “because I know there’s so much more for improvement.”

Central heads to an invitational in Pierre on Saturday, before hosting the Hub City Invitational next Thursday.
