
A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 13-19:
Last year on March 13, 2021: Aberdeen Roncalli coach Derek Larson, his team and their stingy defense won their school’s first girls’ basketball state title, defeating Hamlin 48-31 for the A crown. It was Roncalli’s first win over Northeast Conference rival Hamlin since 2013. Roncalli allowed its three State B opponents only 100 points.
10 years ago on March 15, 2012: Amber Wollschlager of Milbank played a college basketball game in her home state for the first time in the last game of her college career as USD beat the senior and her Drake teammates 61-53 in Vermillion in the first round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament. Wollschlager scored 15.
20 years ago on March 15, 2002: Cheering on the Harding County boys’ basketball team in the first round of the State B tourney in Aberdeen were South Dakota’s newest State B champions. The Harding County girls won the state volleyball title a few days ago in Watertown.
30 years ago on March 17, 1992: Northern State won the NAIA DII National Women’s Basketball Tournament in Oregon by defeating Tarleton State of Texas 73-56. Tourney MVP Barb Schmidt led the way with 17 points and had 76 in the Wolves’ four games.
40 years ago on March 17, 1982: The men’s basketball coaches of the Northern Intercollegiate Conference have agreed to hold an annual, eight-team, three-day holiday tournament right after Christmas with the first one to be hosted in the fall at the Aberdeen Civic Arena.
50 years ago on March 17, 1972: Inducted into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame were A.A. “Joe” Quintal, Harry Gamage and Palmer “Pete” Retzlaff. Quintal was a long-time coach and administrator at Mitchell while Gamage coached University of South Dakota football teams to four North Central Conference titles. Retzlaff was a star athlete at Ellendale and South Dakota State before becoming an All-Pro NFL player.
