A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 6-12:

Last year on March 6, 2021: Both the Aberdeen Central girls and boys have qualified for the state tournaments in the same school year for the 18th time. Since South Dakota switched girls’ basketball to the winter season same as boys in 2002-03, the Golden Eagles have been in both state tourneys in 2021, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2010, 2007, 2005 and 2004. Before that, the AC teams both qualified in the school years of 2002-01, 2000-01, 1998-99, 1992-93, 1987-88, 1986-87, 1984-85, 1979-80, 1978-79 and 1977-78.

10 years ago on March 8, 2012: Aberdeen Central senior and three-sport athlete Tiffany Lundberg began play in her 10th state tourney, rare for a Class AA athlete.

20 years ago on March 10, 2002: Aberdeen Roncalli won the State A volleyball tourney while Aberdeen Central finished second in the AA tourney and Warner finished second in the B tourney.

30 years ago on March 6, 1992: Off an assist from Jason Gauer, Brad Lacher made a layup and a free throw with three seconds left to give Ipswich a 50-47 win over Hoven in the District 13B semifinals.

40 years ago on March 7, 1982: The Aberdeen Elks Swim Club had nine state champions at the state meet in Brookings, and all were in the 10 and under age division: Rene Geisinger, Kathy Bollwerk, Jo Jacobson, Tim Kuck, Joel Donat, Dan Fouberg, Brett Rezatto, Jeff Glover and Nicki Erlenbusch.

50 years ago on March 12, 1972: More than 1,200 fans showed up to welcome home coach John Bruce and his 1972 State B boys’ basketball champion team from Britton. More than 150 vehicles escorted the team bus into town.
