REDFIELD – Timber Lake provided a perfect finish to its boys’ basketball game on Saturday during the Pheasant Shootout at Redfield.

The Panthers made all 13 of their free throws in the final four minutes to rally past fifth-rated Aberdeen Christian for a 52-48 non-conference boys’ basketball win.

The Knights led by six points with four minutes left before Timber Lake scored 11 unanswered points, all of them from the free throw stripe.

“Yeah, it’s impressive, it really is, honestly,” said Christian coach Matt Rohrbach of the foul line proficiency. “Kudos to those guys, because you got to have confidence, of course, to step up and hit free throws at the end of the game. That’s what good teams do.”

Christian bolted out to a 12-3 lead in the early stages of the first quarter with its up-tempo style.

“We try to play fast. We got 7 or 8 guys that we’d like to get into the basketball game. And if you don’t play fast, it’s hard to get them into the game,” Rohrbach said. “If we’re able to get layups and play fast right away, then that’s ideal because it kind of gets us into flow. And it seemed like we got into flow pretty quick in that first quarter.”

Christian led 19-11 at the end of the quarter, making shots and forcing turnovers to fuel the surge.

“A couple shots go in and guys are feeling good and you’re executing what you’re supposed to do defensively and able to shuffle guys in and out. It was a great start and I’m happy for it,” Rohrbach said. “That’s a testament to the guys being locked in in the locker room and to the game plan. We just didn’t quite execute from the second, third and fourth quarter.”

The Knights maintained that eight-point edge heading into the second half, and still led by seven heading into the final period.

The Panthers were able to able to stay in the game, thanks in part to the play of their backcourt.

“They’re a good basketball team. They have quick guards and we knew that coming in and yeah, they got hot there a little bit in the third quarter to kind of put some pressure on us. And then obviously in the fourth quarter they hit enough shots to pull away,” said Rohrbach. “We just didn’t do a good job weathering the storm and sometimes, that’s just the way basketball goes. You don’t get any shots to go and they make a couple, and you lose a little bit of confidence.”

Kanton Hunt scored a dozen points to lead a balanced attack for Timber Lake, which improved to 7-2. Pete Maher followed with nine, Broc Bauer contributed eight, and Jackson Bigger finished with seven.

Luke Kaiser tossed in 13 points, and Dylan Hofer and Brooks Jett each added 12 for the Knights.

Christian, also 7-2 on the season, hosts Faulkton on Tuesday at the Christian School Gym in a girls-boys doubleheader.

“We’re going to continue working against zones obviously and making sure that we’re getting better there. I would say we’re a one day at a time basketball team. That’s not going to change just because we suffered a loss we didn’t want to have happen,” Rohrbach said. “We’re just going to continue to work and get better every single day and that starts Monday, and then we’ll play Faulkton on Tuesday and kind of go from there.”
