A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 18-24, 2026:

Last year on Jan. 23, 2025: NSU graduate Dakotah (Bullen) Popehn discussed her journey from Wolves’ walk-on to finishing 12 th in the women’s marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Popehn (formerly Lindwurm), 29, was the school’s guest of honor at its annual “I Hate Winter” basketball weekend, including taking questions at a public forum. At NSU, she became known for “pulling a Bullen,” where she would surprise everyone with a personal best time by a large margin or with winning a race no one expected her to win.

10 years ago on Jan. 23, 2016: Coach Merle Aske and his Aberdeen Central wrestlers won the Sanford Pentagon Wrestling Tournament in Sioux Falls. Individual champs for the Golden Eagles were Jacob Moore, Collin Haar, Bradley Nelson and Braiden Nelson.

20 years ago on Jan. 21, 2006: Parkston won its own Little B Wrestling Tournament with 225.5 points while Webster was second with 182.5. Three tourney champs emerged to keep their unbeaten seasons going: Dave Schiley (28-0) and Brent Foshiem (27-0) of Webster and Riley Reiff (20-0) of Parkston.

30 years ago on Jan. 20, 1996: The SDSU men’s basketball team ended an eight-game losing streak to rival USD by beating the Coyotes 89-74 in Vermillion. It was the first win over USD in the careers of SDSU seniors Jermaine Showers and Tom Rops, who combined for 49 points.

40 years ago on Jan. 18, 1986: Webster native Lonni Stover scored 17 points to pace Black Hills State to a 78-68 win over the Sioux Falls College men’s basketball team.

50 years ago on Jan. 24, 1976: Rapid City Stevens junior Randy Lewis’ pin streak is over at a state record 45 consecutive pins. Lewis still won the Dickinson State Invitational High School Tournament, but he won via points (16-5) instead of a pin in one of his matches.
