PIERRE – Aberdeen Central claimed a pair of victories over West River opponents Saturday, going 2-1 at the East-West Duals in Pierre on Saturday.

Central claimed victories over Rapid City Stevens (60-9) and Rapid City Central (49-25) and fell to Sturgis (49-21) in its only loss of the day.

“We got to wrestle three quality opponents today,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden.

Central was dominant from start to finish against Stevens, then had a strong showing against Rapid City Central before running into one of the top teams in the state in Sturgis.

“We got the ball rolling early with three pins,” Bowden said, “then it was tough from then on out. They’re a really tough team. … They’ve kind of been the benchmark the last couple years.”

With just a couple duals left in the season, Bowden said his squad is still learning with every outing.

“Just getting your hands on guys like that, you figure out where you’re at,” he said.

Central got 3-win efforts from Ridley Waldo (157 pounds) and Kaylor Swenson (165). Waldo notched two technical falls and a pin, while Swenson recorded pins in all three of his matches.

Bowden said Swenson has started to truly settle into his role at the 165-pound division.

“It was a little rocky to begin with, but now he’s really settling in,” Bowden said. “He pushes the pace the entire match, he’s always looking for bonus points. He’s fun to watch.”

Grayden Timm (175 pounds), Mason Backous (126 pounds) and Esten Foss (120 pounds) notched a pair of contested wins apiece for the Golden Eagles.

Central will host the annual Lee Wolf Invitational next weekend, marking the team’s final home event of the season.

“I think we’re getting better,” Boden said. “I think things look good where we’re at.”
