NSU women edge Southwest in overtime

MARSHALL, Minn. – Northern State overcame a double-digit first-half deficit to grab an 81-79 non-conference women’s college basketball overtime victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon.

Taylor Tool scored a career-high 24 points, including six in overtime, as the Wolves improved to 4-2 on the season.

Northern bolted out to a six-point lead in the extra session and then held off a late comeback by the Mustangs, who missed a shot at the buzzer.

The Wolves owned a 67-59 lead with 7:30 left in regulation before Southwest eventually tied the score with 52 seconds left. Neither team scored after that with Northern missing a shot at the buzzer.

The Mustangs led 23-10 in the first half and still led 28-22 before NSU scored 14 unanswered points to take a 36-28 advantage. Morgan Fiedler had six points in the surge.

Northern’s biggest lead in the contest was 44-31 in the final minute of the opening half.

Fiedler and Izzy Moore each finished with 15 points, and Megan Counts added 14 to the Northern total. Moore contributed eight assists.

The Wolves outrebounded Southwest by a 39-24 margin.

Northern heads to Bismarck, N.D. on Thursday to take on Mary in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest.
