JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Northern State built up a big lead and then held off Jamestown at the finish to conclude the season with a 46-40 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football win on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves built a 19-point lead and then watched the Jimmies score a pair of touchdowns in the final two minutes to close to within six points.

“The offense was great all day, just like they were all year. Tremendous preparation and execution,” said Northern coach Mike Schmidt. “The defense made the stops and adjustments we needed to in the second to pull away. We made it interesting at the end, but I’m proud of the way we executed to finish.”

The Wolves owned a 31-21 halftime advantage as Wyatt Block scored three touchdowns in the opening half, including a 70-yard TD run. Block finished the day with 190 yards rushing as well as 19 yards receiving.

“What more can I say about the offensive line and Wyatt Block? He’s just an incredible runner and teammate. Those guys up front pave the way and Wyatt just seemed to have an extra gear,” Schmidt said. “That was the biggest change in his game this year. He had a whole different gear from everyone else. He put than on display with his 70-yard run today.”

Brock Bagozzi passed for 151 yards and a touchdown, while Daniel Britt also threw for a TD, as the Wolves colllected 497 yards from scrimmage.

Cooper Logan and Max Van Landingham each finished with nine tackles to lead the NSU defense.

“While we’re disappointed giving up that many points, we came up with the stops we needed to in the second half,” Schmidt said. “Third down was going to be the story of the game. They were 7 for 10 in the first half and only 2 for 8 in the second half. The guys made some great adjustments.”

The Wolves were able to accomplish a goal by sending their seniors out on a high note in their final game.

“All week we wanted to finish with a win for our seniors. Ending their careers with a win was our focus and motivation this week,” Schmidt said. “I’m glad we could send them off with a win.”

Northern ended its season with a 7-4 record including wins against Minnesota Duluth, Moorhead, and Wayne State.

“Two of those teams are conference champs this year. We all want to skip steps on our climb to success. This year, the step we needed to address was the depth of our program,” Schmidt said. “When we lost five starters on defense, we couldn’t find our footing. We need to build that depth to sustain those injuries. Although, I’m not sure any team can sustain the same level of success when you lose the players we did.”

Schmidt pointed out that Gabe Gutierrez, who missed the final six weeks of the season, tied for the NSIC lead in sacks, and Jake Adams, who missed the final five weeks, led the conference in tackles up until Saturday.
