NSU women fall in OT, men also lose season opener

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Northern State women’s and men’s basketball teams both came up short in their season-opening contests on Friday.

The NSU women fell to Pittsburg State 72-70 in overtime in an event in Kearney, Neb. The Wolves scored eight unanswered points to start the fourth quarter and had a lead for a good share of the period before falling behind by three points in the final minute.

Morgan Fiedler nailed a three-point field goal with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. The Wolves trailed late in OT, and sliced a five-point deficit down to a single point before Pittsburg made a late free throw for the final margin of difference.

Izzy Moore lead the Wolves with 19 points and Fiedler added 16. Taylor Tool contributed 11. Northern faces Kearney today.

The Northern State men lost to Oklahoma Baptist 83-72 at an event in Bethany, Okla. The Wolves fell behind by nine points in the opening half and were never able to recover.

Cameron Mercadel topped Northern with 20 points. Ty Rogers followed with 17, Marshawn Smith contributed 15, and Joshua Book finished with 10.

NSU takes on the host team Southern Nazerene tonight.
