Northern State football set a new bar for the most points put up in the coach Mike Schmidt era with a 55-23 win over Southwest Minnesota State University last Saturday.

The Wolves’ lone non-conference game of the year was the only action in the NSIC this week. It started quick for the Wolves as they scored less than two minutes into the game when Brock Bagozzi hit Carter Campbell for a 29-yard touchdown. SMSU answered back with a field goal before the Wolves scored four straight times thanks to Mason Stubbe on a 35-yard pass from Bagozzi, Gavin Giesler on a 22-yard pass from Daniel Britt, Blake Clay returning a punt block, and a 10-yard touchdown pass from Zach Jorgensen to Zach Kraft.

The Mustangs scored to make it 34-9 before Cooper Eiensbeisz found the end zone on an 8-yard pass from Bagozzi. The Mustangs scored once more with 20 seconds left in the half to make it 41-16 going into halftime.

It was a quiet third quarter until Stubbe found the end zone for the second time, this time running it in from 5 yards out with 1:17 left in the third. SMSU scored one final time with 10:48 remaining in the game before Kimani Quade scored on an 8-yard run with 7:40 remaining for the final TD of the game.

Wyatt Block led the way rushing with 117 yards on 8 carries, averaging 14.6 yards per carry, making it his fourth straight game with over 100 yards total. Jake Adams put up a team-high 12 tackles, and three Wolves found themselves with an interception: Andrew Ewald, Kyle Thomas, and Cooper Logan. Logan also recorded the lone sack on the night.
