A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 5-11, 2025:
Last year on Oct. 6, 2024: Timber Lake and SDSU graduate Tucker Kraft had his best day as an NFL tight end as he led the Green Bay Packers to a 24-19 win over the LA Rams. Kraft had four catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns, including a 66-yarder in which he reached a top speed of 19.7 mph (fastest speed recorded by an NFL TE so far in 2024). Meanwhile, former SDSU standout Christian Rozeboom had eight tackles for the Rams.
10 years ago on Oct. 6, 2015: The Roncalli boys’ golf team claimed its first Class A state title behind Gabe Heller, who won medalist honors with a two- day total of 152. Ryan Patnoe is the Roncalli coach.
20 years ago on Oct. 8, 2005: The Rapid City Stevens girls won three state titles today in tennis, softball and soccer.
30 years ago on Oct. 7, 1995: Winona State rallied from a 10-point deficit for a 26-23 win over visiting NSU. After the Wolves fumbled, Travis Walch scored the winning TD with 2:29 left in the game.
40 years ago on Oct. 6, 1985: Host NSU won the NAIA District 12 Men’s Golf Tournament at Moccasin Creek Country Club. Kip Bollinger of the Wolves was the individual winner with a 155 while teammates Terry Rotert took third and Dave Wirtz took fifth.
50 years ago on Oct. 11, 1975: The NSU football team erupted for 18 points in the final 42 seconds of the first half. Winona was leading 10-0 and heading for another touchdown just before halftime. However, the Warriors fumbled and Craig Caspers picked it up and returned it 97 yards for NSU’s first points. The Wolves added the two-point conversion on Vern Jark’s pass to Randy Sutton. Following the TD, NSU’s Dan Mehlbrech intercepted a pass and returned it 37 yards for a TD. Greg Ford added the PAT. NSU then successfully executed an on-side kick. Ford then closed out the first half with a 24-yard field goal and an 18-10 NSU lead. The Wolves won 25-16.
