Milbank pulls away from Wynot at state tourney

BRANDON – The Milbank Firechiefs scored three late runs to help secure a 5-3 win over the Wynot (Neb.) Expos during the first round of the State B Amateur Baseball Tournament on Friday afternoon.

Milbank got on the board first when Taylor Boerger hit a two-out single to the right side plating Dylan Gillespie in the top of the first inning.

The Firechiefs scored another two-out run in the second inning as Kaden Krause and Tanner Hallquist performed a first-and-third play as Hallquist scored from third while Krause took second.

Wynot put up its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking advantage of a pair of walks before an RBI single.

The score remained 2-1 until the Firechiefs scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to give starting pitcher Dom Boerger some insurance runs.

Brady Krause scored on a bunt by Tyler Krause, before Hallquist doubled on the next pitch plating Boerger. Kaden Krause later singled in Hallquist for the final run of the inning.

Wynot answered with one of its own runs in the bottom half of the inning and one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.

Boerger threw all nine innings, giving up eight hits and striking out 12. Taylor Boerger and Isaac Schulte both had a pair of hits.
