A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 24-30, 2025:
Last year on Aug. 24, 2024: Clark-Willow Lake’s Masyn Knock tackled an Aberdeen Roncalli ball carrier in the end zone with 3:39 left in the first half. It produced a 2-0 CWL win. In 2023, Roncalli defeated the Cyclones 7-2.
10 years ago on Aug. 25, 2015: The Toronto Blue Jays signed former Aberdeen Roncalli standout Christian Cox and assigned him to a rookie league squad, the Bluefield Blue Jays. Cox was set to start his final year of classes at the University of Nebraska this past week.
20 years ago on Aug. 24, 2005: The 2005 South Dakota high school volleyball season is set to serve off with the defending champions being Northwestern (Class B), Milbank (A) and Sioux Falls Lincoln (AA).
30 years ago on Aug. 26, 1995: Kelly Horton scored 19 points to pace Sisseton past Aberdeen Roncalli 58-51 in girls’ basketball. Jess Cameron had 19 for the Cavaliers.
40 years ago on Aug. 24, 1985: Ironman efforts by a father-son team earned Aberdeen Wendy’s-Coke the State A Amateur Baseball Championship. Aberdeen came into the championship of the double-elimination event needing to beat Rapid City Gregs twice. Burt Beattie pitched a 10-hitter in the game first game won by Aberdeen 6-5. The 21-year-old pitched a one-hitter in the second game won by Aberdeen 11-1. His dad, 49-year-old Bob, was the catcher for his son in both games and the Beatties were named tourney co-MVPs.
50 years ago on Aug. 24, 1975: Major League Baseball issued a statement naming some of the top candidates for American League rookie of the year. The list included Rapid City native Dave Collins of the California Angels. The release said Collins is the fastest man in MLB.
