A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 17-23, 2025:

Last year on Aug. 20, 2024: Named as one of the six captains for the NDSU football team this season was former Pierre standout Grey Zabel. He is a 6-foot-6, 305-pound senior offensive tackle. His parents Mark and Tanna (Negaard) Zabel were former standout athletes at NSU as his dad played football and his mom basketball and track. His brother, Jett Zabel, is a freshman on the NDSU team.

10 years ago on Aug. 21, 2015:  Todd Stark of Watertown won three races in one night at Brown County Speedway. Included in his night’s work were two Modified feature victories (a regularly scheduled one and a make-up one) along with a heat race.

20 years ago on Aug. 23, 2005: The championship game of the American Legion World Series had an odd ending at Floyd Fitzgerald Stadium in Rapid City. Oklahoma (Enid) defeated Washington (Twin Cities) 7-6 on a two-out, bases- loaded walk-off balk.

30 years ago on Aug. 17, 1995: Wessington Springs native Jeff Baumgart qualified to represent the United States in the 181-pound weight class at the Junior World Weightlifting Championships in England. Baumgart did so by winning his division at the USA Junior Nationals by setting records in the squat (600 pounds), dead lift (551) and bench press (391).

40 years ago on Aug. 17, 1985: Rapid City Post 22 is preparing for the Central Plains Regional after winning its 16th American Legion Baseball State A Tournament in a row on Aug. 14. The Hard Hats (56-12) of coach Dave Ploof rallied to defeat Sioux Falls Post 15 5-4 in the championship. Darin Mueller scored the winning run in the seventh inning on Dave Williams’ single.

50 years ago on Aug. 23, 1975: Former NSU standout Rich Andrzejewski struck out 14 to lead the Yankton Lakers to a 3-1 win over the Sioux Falls Merchants for the State A Amateur Baseball championship.
