Castlewood dominates Crofton in State B win

BRANDON – The Castlewood Ravens produced 15 runs on just seven hits on the way to defeating the Crofton (Neb.) Bluejays 15-2 in seven innings during the opening round of the State B Amateur Baseball Tournament on Friday night.

Gus Steiger accounted for five RBIs in the leadoff spot for the Ravens, who took advantage of nine walks in the game. He had a two-out two-run triple in the bottom of the third, driving in Aidan Stewart and Adam Ching. Steiger then produced a bases-loaded triple in the sixth, plating Adam Ching, Lucas Ching, and Carson Kirwan. Steiger scored four runs in the contest as well.

Alex Gauer went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs. He had a two-run double to left in the second frame, driving in Adam Ching and Steiger. Gauer’s single up the middle in the third also pushed Steiger across the plate.

The Ravens ended up scoring three runs in the first, two in the second, four in the third and topped it off with six runs in the sixth. Nate Phinney started the offensive onslaught by driving in Steiger in the first, before Stewart had a two-run single plating Phinney and Kellan Benck.

In the top of the fourth, the Bluejays got on the board with a pair of runs, before Castlewood accounted for six two-out runs in the sixth.

Gauer started on the bump throwing six innings, giving up just one hit, two earned runs, and recording four strikeouts. Benck came on in relief in the seventh inning and struck out the side to finish the contest.
