BRANDON – The frustrations continued for the Aberdeen Smittys Friday afternoon at the Dakota Classic American Legion baseball tournament.
The Smittys suffered an 8-7 walk-off 10th inning loss to Shakopee, Minn., and then fell to Brandon Valley 3-1. Aberdeen has now lost five games this season by one run and another by two runs.
The Smittys owned a 6-0 lead over Shakopee, before the momentum turned.
Ridley Waldo had an RBI single in the second inning, Grant Beyer added a two-run double in the third, and Lance Siefken drove in a run in a three-run fourth. However, the Minnesota squad tied the score in the bottom half of the frame.
Aberdeen surged ahead again in the fifth with two runs as Beyer and Jaxon Ladner belted back-to-back home runs to left field to start the inning.
The scored remained 8-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh. After two outs to start the frame, Shakopee mounted a rally and tied the game on a two-run double, and eventually walked off the Smittys in the bottom of the 10th.
Waldo, Siefken, and Beyer each had two hits to lead Aberdeen. Beyer also drove in three runs.
Brandon Valley’s Brayden Knutson retired the first 11 Smittys he faced in the other game.
Trailing 2-0 Aberdeen pieced together four of its five runs in the sixth inning. Waldo led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly by Jehiel Aviles. The Smittys then added three more hits in the frame, but the rally came to a halt when a runner was thrown out at the plate.
Ladner had two of Aberdeen’s five hits in the contest.
The trio of Michael Dutenhoffer, Beyer, and Karson Borge combined to limit Brandon Valley to four hits.
Aberdeen is back at it again today taking on the North Winnipeg Pirates out of Canada at 3:30 this afternoon.
