HURON – The Aberdeen Smittys were unable to slow down the first-inning offense from Huron Tuesday night.
The Smittys dropped both games of their American Legion baseball doubleheader to Huron 4-1 and 18-8. The hosts scored a combined seven runs in the first inning of the two games.
In game one, Huron scored all four of its runs in the first inning.
Jaxon Ladner came on in relief in the first with no outs, bases loaded and down two. He got the next two batters out, but an RBI single on an 0-2 count plated the other two.
There was no more scoring until the Smittys got on the board in the top of the fifth. Grant Beyer doubled to lead off the inning, and with two outs, Ridley Waldo singled him in for Aberdeen’s lone run of the game.
Waldo notched two of the Aberdeen’s four total hits. Ladner threw five innings, giving up only five hits, and Levi Hoffman closed out the game giving up two hits in the bottom of the sixth.
In game two, the Smittys got on the board first with a run in the top of the opening inning. Talan Dutenhoeffer singled in Lance Siefken, who previously advanced on a wild pitch to put himself in scoring position.
Huron answered with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. The two teams then exchanged four-run second innings.
Grant Beyer had a two-run single, plating Hoffman and Bennett Eisenbeisz to tie the game at 3-3. Karson Borge doubled in Beyer, and on the next pitch Waldo doubled in Borge to put Aberdeen up 5-3. The Smittys left the bases loaded in the bottom of the second.
After Huron matched the four-run frame, the Smittys took the lead again in the fourth inning, the fourth lead change of the game.
Lance Siefken singled and Dutenhoffer walked. A wild pitch put both runners in scoring position, and Ladner produced a two-run double to tie the game at 7-7. With Ladner on third and Hoffman on first, the Smittys performed a first-and-third play to get Ladner across the plate before Hoffman got tagged out for an 8-7 lead.
Huron then took control for good, putting up six runs in the bottom of the fourth, adding six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, tacking on four runs in the fifth, and scoring one more in the sixth to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Dutenhoeffer went 2-for-3, drove in a run and scored once in the second game. Ladner and Beyer each plated a pair.
