A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of June 1-7, 2025:

Last year on June 1, 2024: Castlewood won the first State B high school softball state title in 2023, and were state runners-up to Chester in 2024. The 2024 Castlewood team had six sets of sisters playing: Morgan and Avery Wilson; Natalie and Karli Akin; Kelly and Kayla Goens; Lucy and Lilly Jacobsen; Sophia and Cydni Kudrna (dad Jay is assistant coach); and Claire and Bridgette Horn (dad Craig is head coach).

10 years ago on June 5, 2015: Two members of the Presentation College men’s basketball team died in a vehicle crash near Valentine, Neb. Player Cameron Isreal (23) and graduate assistant coach and former player Terry Strong (26) died following the accident.

20 years ago on June 5, 2005: About 1,600 runners are registered for today’s annual Deadwood-Mickelson Trail Marathon.

30 years ago on June 3, 1995: Gari Jo Syverson held off her sister, Timi Bloomberg, to win the women’s masters title at the national eight-ball pool tourney in Las Vegas. The Rapid City sisters also advanced to the state finals in April, with Bloomberg winning the state title.

40 years ago on June 7, 1985: NSU baseball coach Bart Berndt was named the NAIA District 12 Baseball Coach of the Year for the fifth time. His Wolves won the district title for the third straight season.

50 years ago on June 1, 1975: Milbank and NSU graduate and multi-sport standout Steve Graf has been named as a football and track assistant at Aberdeen Central.
