BROOKINGS – The Aberdeen Smittys fell twice to late-game rallies by Brookings on Thursday. The hosts scored late to sweep Aberdeen 2-1 and 4-3 in American Legion baseball action.
The first game was scoreless until the Smittys scored in the fourth inning.
Ridley Waldo hit a two-out single to bring in Jared Klootwyk, but that was all the Smittys were able to produce on offense.
Brookings scored its two runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. Cooper Schneider singled, advanced to third on a stolen base, and scored on a passed ball. A couple of batters later, an error allowed the game-winning run to cross the plate.
MIchael Dutenhoffer started on the bump for the Smittys, throwing 5.2 innings, giving up three hits and striking out four.
In game two, the Smittys got on the board first again, this time putting up two in the first inning. Lance Siefken singled in Jeheil Aviles, and Joe Cogley tripled in Siefken.
Brookings matched that with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning, and followed it up with another run in the third to take a 3-2 lead.
The Smittys tied the game up in the top of the fifth frame, which happened to be final inning. Siefken produced his second RBI, singling in Levi Hoffman.
Brookings then walked off the Smittys with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.
