The Northern State women’s softball team recorded a pair of walk-off victories during its final action of the season this past weekend.

The Wolves got walk-off hits from Tevan Bryant and Avarie Eagle as they won three out of four games.

NSU swept Minnesota Crookston 4-3 and 3-2 on Saturday and split against Bemidji, losing the first game 8-4 and winning the second 8-7 at Koehler Hall of Fame Field.

Against Crookston, the Golden Eagles struck first, but didn’t hold the lead for long as Brooke Wolf tied the game in the bottom half of the first. There was no scoring until Crookston put two across in the fifth, for a 3-1 lead. With only one out left in the game, Aune Boben reached first on a walk, Eden Ford reached base on an error, which set up an RBI single for Madi Jones.

The following at bat, Tevan Bryant hit a walk-off double, scoring both runners on base to give the Wolves their first win of the weekend.

In game two against UMC, Tevan Bryant scored Boben in the third on a sac-fly, followed by a two-run double from Dessa Bryant in the fourth. Abby Rux came on in relief in the fifth after Crookston scored two runs and shut the Golden Eagles down for the remainder of the game.

The Wolves came back the next day and suffered a loss to Bemidji State in the first game of the doubleheader 8-4. The Beavers got on the board first with a run in the top of the first, but NSU’s Emma Owens answered with a home run in the second. Bemidji went on to score four more runs in the next two innings before Avarie Eagle brought in Jones on an RBI single. Bemidji lengthened its lead to 8-2 going into the final inning, and the 6-run deficit was too much to overcome as the Wolves scored twice in the final inning.

Bemidji’s momentum carried over into game two as the Beavers jumped out to a 7-0 lead by the top of the fourth inning. The Wolves chipped away with a 2-run home run from Tevan Bryant, followed by an RBI single from Brooke Carlson scoring Dessa Bryant.

Down four runs, the Wolves put up one more in the fifth frame with a RBI single from Tevan Bryant. Heading into the final at-bats, the Wolves provided some late-game heroics.

Senior Brooke Carlson drew a walk to lead off the inning. Boben popped out, which was followed by a hit by pitch in Abby Rux’s final at bat of her career.

Jones then flew out to rightfield, but Carlson was able to advance to third, which set up another RBI single for Tevan Bryant. Then with a 2 and 2 count and two outs, Eagle made her final collegiate at-bat a memorable one. She sent a no-doubter over the left field wall for a game-winning home run to walk it off for the Wolves to close out the season, and her career.

Tevan Bryant earned first team all-conference honors, Madi Jones earned second team, and Avarie Eagle earned Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Defensive Team.

Wolves baseball also had a series win over Wayne State in its final home series of the year.

The Wolves took game one 3-2, striking first in that game on a bases-loaded walk in the third inning. The Wolves put up two more runs in the fourth inning, started by Dillon Castellanos who brought in Michael Benevides on an error, and finished with a sac-fly from Nick Ochoa. Wayne put up two runs in the sixth, but that was all the scoring the Wildcats could muster as Daulton Vanderloo earned the save.

In the second game of the day, Wayne struck first in the fourth. Dylan Soulek tied it up for the Wolves with an RBI single, followed by a 2-run double from Nick Friedges for a 3-1 Wolves lead.

Wayne didn’t get back on the board until the eighth, and then tied it up in the ninth forcing extra innings. Wayne put up three runs in the 11th, and closed out the Wolves for a final score of 6-3.

In the final game of the series, an early start helped put the Wolves secure a 9-6 victory. Friedges hit another 2-run double in the first, and followed it up by stealing home for an early 3-0 lead.

Wayne eventually tied the game in the third frame, and took the lead in the fifth. Trailing 5-3, NSU battled back. Friedges brought in another run on a single, and Drew Benson tied the game.

The Wolves regained the lead on a Weidner single, but it didn’t hold it for long as Wayne tied te score in the following inning.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Mike Hudson scored on a wild pitch, at Northern regained the lead, and Friedges brought in his 5th RBI of the game on a 2-run double. The Wolves held the  lead for the remainder of the game securing a series win over the fourth best team in conference.

Wolves baseball then hit the road for a doubleheader against Augustana on Tuesday dropping

both games 8-1 and 10-5. In game one, the Vikings put up three runs in the first, before Ochoa cut it down with a solo home run in the third. Augustana put up three more in the fifth, and two more in the sixth as they closed out the Wolves in game one.

In game two, the Vikings struck again in the first, this time with two runs. They extended it to a 6-0 lead in the fourth. The Wolves didn’t get on the board until the sixth inning, when an error allowed Castellanos and Brenna Phillips to score. Augustana put up two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, before the Wolves responded with two more runs of their own in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Phillips. Castellons cut the lead down to three with a RBI single, but the Vikings put up two more insurance runs to close out the series.

The Wolves Track and Field teams competed in the Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday breaking four school records. On day one, the two school records were broken by Jonathan Burkhalter in the 3000m steeplechase placing him in the top 25, and the sprint medley relay team of Kyanna Collymore, Emma Hunt, Alli Jackson and Summer Carlson taking third.

On day two, both the men’s and women’s distance medley relay teams broke school records. For the men, the team consisted of David VanVeen, Drew Henriksen, Lincoln Woodring, and Burkhalter and for the women the runners were Carlson, Elisbet Osk Jonsdottir, Jackson and Emaleigh Olesiak.

Jayden Munroe won the triple jump with a 15.01m jump putting him top 25 nationally, and the long jump with a 7.39m jump. Carson Barnett took home gold in the Javelin with a 63.55m throw, and Levi Reis followed right behind in second.

The Wolves baseball squad will see its final action of the year traveling to Minnesota-Crookston for a three-game series, and the track and field squads get one last event at the USD Tune-Up before the NSIC championships.
