A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of May 18-24, 2025:
Last year on May 18, 2024: Gene Morsching retired after 37 years as the city recreation superintendent of the Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department. The Huron native and SDSU graduate came to Aberdeen in 1987 after having previously worked in Redfield. That city department and its legendary staff has enriched life in Aberdeen with many experiences, activities and new/improved facilities over the last four decades, and Morsching has been one of the cornerstones to those enrichments.
10 years ago on May 19, 2015: After 31 seasons as the boys’ and girls’ golf coach at O’Gorman and 26 seasons of doing the same job at Rapid City Stevens, OG’s Rod Garrison and RCS’s Phil Hunt retired after the State AA girls’ golf championship. In the last 31 seasons with a combined 62 individual and team state championships available, their combined teams won 45 percent (28 of 62) of the state team titles and 35 percent (22 of 62) of the state individual titles.
20 years ago on May 24, 2005: Lead-Deadwood won the girls’ golf State A title for the second year in a row. Lead-Deadwood’s Tara Hofer was the individual champion and her sister, 2004 Lead-Deadwood graduate Brittnay Hofer, was the state champ last year.
30 years ago on May 18, 1995: Jaime Pauli won the 1,600 meters in 4:59.17 at the Region 1A Meet on her home track in Milbank while Meg Larson of Aberdeen Roncalli finished second in 4:59.39. They became the first two high school girls in state history to run the event under five minutes.
40 years ago on May 25, 1985: Several South Dakotans earned All-American honors at the NCAA DII national track meet: Jeff Gross of Augustana (third in 400 meters); Rod DeHaven of SDSU (second in 1,500); Ross Brockshus of SDSU (second in discus); and Todd Pharis of USD (eighth in discus).
50 years ago on May 24, 1975: Mike Duch of Aberdeen Roncalli won the 100 meters at the State AA track meet.
