HURON – After a rough outing on Monday, Aberdeen Central more than made it up for it on Thursday.
The Golden Eagles rolled to the team championship with their third best score in program history with a 301, and a trio of golfers taking the top three individual spots.
“It was really nice to kind of bounce back from a subpar round on Monday,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman.
The Golden Eagles were a whopping 23 strokes better than any other team in the field.
“It was an impressive day,” Zimmerman said. “I was hoping we would turn it around, but it was just impressive how quickly we did it, and by how many strokes we did it today was another thing.”
Olivia Braun earned medalist honors with a four-under-par total of 68. The junior was motivated after an off day for her on Monday.
“Obviously, Olivia wasn’t happy on Monday and she turned it around today,” Zimmerman.
Kyley Wirebaugh shot a career-best two-under-par 70 and finished runner-up.
“That round kind of stands out, with all her birdies on the back nine that she had,” Zimmerman said, noting that the sophomore had six birdies in all. “Her round today was just phenomenal. You look at it up and down, and she just really played well.”
Emma Dohrer finished third for the Golden Eagles with a round of 76.
“Emma’s been consistent all year,” Zimmerman said.
Chloe Vikander finished 15th with a total of 87.
Add it all together, and the Golden Eagles were able to shoot one of their best totals ever.
“There was a lot of good individual performances today,” Zimmerman said. “We always say if you take care of yourself and your game, the team score will kind of show that, and I think that happened today.”
The Golden Eagles have produced the lowest rounds in school history so far this spring.
“Credit to the girls,” Zimmerman said. “They’ve been playing really well, and just working hard at their games and it’s paying off.”
Central will right back it at today in another tournament, this time in Yankton.
“We got another day (Friday),” Zimmerman said. “It’s hard to go out and put two really good days together back-to-back. We’re going to try, but it’s hard.”
