PIERRE – Aberdeen Roncalli won an individual championship on the way to taking third place in team points during the Governor Invitational tennis tournament on Friday.

Powerhouse Sioux Falls Christian won the team title with Pierre taking runner-up.

“The third place team finish was a great achievement and I was extremely proud of my guys,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell. “They stayed strong through the long days and blistering heat.”

Caleb Stoks won the championship at fifth flight singles, Linus Johnson ended up taking second at third flight singles as a wild-card entry, and the flight two doubles team of Ezra Feickert and Ben Goebel finished runner-up.

“Gannon (May) had a hard-fought loss in his singles second-round match and came back with a strong victory in his third place match,” Haskell said. “Caleb Stoks found he loves the tournament format. He won flight five and looked primed for a deep run at state.”

Johnson competed on an all-star team comprised of players from each team competing to round out the draws.

“The singles surprise of the tournament was our JV ‘all-star’ entry into the main draw. Linus Johnson was entered into the main draw in flight three,” Haskell said. “He had a great tournament and came away with a second-place finish.”

Roncalli has just one dual left before heading into postseason.

“A dual with Milbank on Monday and then a week off for state tournament preparation,” Haskell said. “Looking forward to seeing my boys play at state. They look ready for the challenge.”
