After closing out the regular season on a high note, the Aberdeen Wings have entered the postseason even higher.

The Wings secured back-to-back overtime wins over top-seeded Bismarck last weekend in their best of five NAHL playoff series and now have a chance to eliminate the Bobcats when game three takes place tonight at the Odde Ice Center. Puck drop is set for 7:15.

Aberdeen enters the contest on an 11-game winning streak.

“We ended the season playing some really, really good hockey, and we were healthy. The winning became contagious. I think that was the right thing happening at the right time,” said Wings coach Scott Langer. “Obviously, the guys went in there to Bismarck and they played very well. … Obviously, the games could have went either way, but we found a way to come out top.”

The Wings have found ways to come out on top a lot lately. Their last setback took place back in mid-March.

“The guys are enjoying one another right now. They’re enjoying this time of the season,” Langer said. “You can just tell. You don’t have to say a whole lot to them. They’re pretty dialed in.”

Aberdeen held a potent Bismarck squad scoreless in game two, a rare feat and a major accomplishment.

“We kept them of the board on Saturday. They’re a potent offense team. Keeping them off the board is something in its own,” Langer said. “That’s just our guys buying in to playing well defensively, and obviously getting good goaltending.”

While the Wings have a commanding 2-0 lead in the series and need just one more win to advance to the Central Division finals, Langer is not about to take anything for granted.

He knows that the Bobcats will come out with a chip on their shoulder tonight.

“They’re going to be desperate. That’s for sure. They were the best team in the league. They were the President’s Cup champions. They’re not going to be an easy out, that’s for sure,” Langer said. “They’re going to board the bus coming here on a mission. We’re going to have to match that intensity and we’re going to have to play well on home ice.”

Langer said the squad set itself up by stealing home-ice advantage last week and now it has to finish the task.

“We gave ourselves the opportunity to shift the series in our favor, back to home ice, so we’ve got to take advantage of it, that’s for sure,” Langer said. “It doesn’t happen all that often, so when you get the opportunity, you’ve got to find a way to put them away.”

There will likely be a large and loud fan base tonight. A strong start would be beneficial, according to Langer.

“At home you have to have a good start,” Langer said. “You have to be on your toes from the drop of the puck, and put the pressure on them right away, and try to take their confidence away really early.”

The first two games went down to the wire and there will likely be little margin for error tonight as well.

“It comes down to one play or one mistake and the series can change again,” Langer said. “So you just got to be focused on playing up to your capabilities and execute at the right time.”
