HURON – It wasn’t quite what Aberdeen Central expected, but the Golden Eagles sure made the most of their opportunity on Tuesday.
While Central was expecting fellow Class AA power Mitchell to be in the field, they quickly regrouped and responded with their best team score ever.
Due to a scheduling conflict, Mitchell, which edged Central by one stroke last week, was not at the event.
“You’re still competing, but it’s just a little bit different mindset than what you’re used to,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “Kind of switching gears all of a sudden, but we still needed to go out there and play the course. We’re going to be down there in a couple of weeks again, so this was good.”
The Golden Eagles shot a combined team total of 300, which eclipsed the previous low total of 303 set at the 2023 state tournament in Pierre.
“Today was actually our best team score ever, since I’ve been coaching,” Zimmerman said.
He said that score is remarkable no matter who is in the field.
“You start getting down into that 300s, that’s a pretty exceptional score on any given day, any given golf course for the girls,” Zimmerman said. “That’s pretty impressive.”
Central claimed the top four individual spots, led by Emma Dohrer with a 71, followed by Olivia Braun with a 72, Kyley Wirebaugh with a 73, and seventh-grader Carly Withers with an 80.
“We definitely had some good individual performances today,” Zimmerman said. “There’s no doubt.”
Chloe Vikander was sixth with an 85, Genevieve Golz tied for eighth with a 100, and Kylee Herman tied for 11th with a 102.
“There’s a lot good things that happened today, regardless of who was there. … We did it collectively as a group,” Zimmerman said. “You can’t depend on one or two people just to kind of support your group and go low all the time. It just goes to show what we’re capable of.”
Central is off until playing at Pierre on Tuesday.
