HURON – For the second straight day the Aberdeen Roncalli tennis squad split a pair of tennis duals.

The Cavaliers edged Milbank 5-4 before dropping a 7-2 decision to Huron on Tuesday.

“Lots of great matches,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell of the Milbank dual. “It was nice to notch another win with some strong play from 5 and 6 singles to get us over the top to a 5-4 team win.”

Caleb Stoks defeated his foe at flight five singles 10-7, while Liam Voehl grabbed a 10-4 win at flight six singles.

“Caleb Stoks and Liam Voehl teamed up for a big win at three doubles as well,” Haskell noted.

Gannon May had a hand in all four of Roncalli’s other victories on the day, winning both of his singles matches and teaming up for a pair of doubles wins as well.

“Gannon May in particular had a great day,” Haskell said.

The senior was involved in a pair of 10-3 decisions against Milbank and then was on the winning end of two 10-8 scores against Huron.

“Gannon jumped out to a big lead and found the strength to hold back his opponent as Huron’s Matthew Thin mounted a big comeback,” Haskell said. “Gannon dug deep and shut the door to seal a 10-8 victory. The other big win against Huron came at number one doubles where (Will) Haskell and May fought hard to earn another 10-8 victory.”

Roncalli also got a lot of sub-varsity matches in the book.

“Today was great as we also were able to get a bunch of the younger kids some matches as well,” Coach Haskell said.

The Cavaliers are now off for the rest of the week after playing four duals in two days.

“Looking forward to a week of recovery before we had down to the Sioux Falls Invite next week,” Haskell said.
